Each and every society in the world exhibits some values which inform their day to day encounter with other people. It is through these values that bind humanity together. Values also distinguish one society from another. As such, it is imperative that the values of various societies are well understood in order for one to appreciate diversity. Robin Williams in his works shed light on the values he thought Americans had. This paper delves into some of these values with attention being placed on freedom, equality, nationalism, and patriotism.
One of the main values that Americans believe in is freedom. They believe that everyone has the right to do whatever they wish to do as long as it doesn’t tamper with the rights of other people. Freedom is the fabric of American society. The value of freedom is fundamental since the declaration of independence (Kretzmer, 2015). The founding fathers envisioned a country where people were allowed the freedom to pursue their interests. Americans exercise freedom in many ways. First and foremost, every person is given the freedom of religion. As such, they are able to choose their religion without coercion or being subjected to punishment. As a matter of fact, the constitution has expressly curtailed lawmakers from crafting laws aimed at imposing religion on the people. Individuals coming into America also enjoy the same freedom just like the citizens.
