Marriage and sexual behavior forms a critical part in any given society. In his Research Paper,  Promiscuous Girls, Good Wives, and Cheating Husbands: Gender Inequality, Transitions to Marriage, and Infidelity in Southeastern Nigeria, Smith discusses the findings of his study in Southern Nigeria on how women and men approach the question of marriage and the importance of marriage in the society (Smith, 2010).  He explains that marriage is viewed as a necessary aspect in adult life. To women marriage is a status symbol other than an aspect of inequality, to women marriage is a task they have been looking forward to as it makes them to feel as complete members of the community.  This happens through motherhood and also through being a wife. Smith however does not expound on how marriage is important to men other than making intimation that marriage to men as a basic need in life as the success of a person is measured on the ability to come up with a family (Smith, 2010).  Marriage in the African society is seen as fundamental aspect even in the modern age.  Smith goes ahead to speak of promiscuity in the Southern parts of Nigeria centering on Igbo community in the Owerri which is a urban centre bustling with many students and environment characteristic of night life, and sexual joints. The other place he conducts his research is in Ubakala a growing village, which is near Umahia in Aba state of Nigeria (Smith, 2010).
