Introduction

Australia feeds off its cultural diversity, as the vibrancy of ethnic and racial diversity continues to suffuse all aspects of contemporary life. However, there has been reports of striking deficiencies in the provision of quality care for the mentally ill, which are attributable to lack of cultural competency. According to Alert (2008), mentally ill patients suffer the brunt of cultural incompetence, which translates into diminishing health seeking behavior or the premature termination of treatment. Notably, the practice of mental health nursing is largely dependent on the interplay between a myriad of factors such as availability, accessibility and affordability of health care.
