Article Review-Nutrition

  1. What is the purpose of the research? In what section did you find this information?

The purpose of this research was to investigate the link between carcinogenesis and nutrients found in the one-carbon metabolism pathway. Folate is an integral part of DNA synthesis, and its deficiency is believed to lead to genetic mutation, altered epigenetic modification, and damages the formation of chromosomes. This information is in the “background information” segment of this paper.

  • What are the hypotheses? These may or may not be explicitly stated, so you might have to infer these?

This study seeks to investigate how folate deficiency can lead to cancer. This information is found in the first paragraph of the article. The article is based on the hypothesis that folate deficiency leads to esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

  • Why would this research be necessary, i.e. what are the practicality/usability/ implications of the research results? In what section did you find this information?

This research is crucial, especially considering the fact the socio-economic effects posed by cancer on victims and their families. Also, it is a well-documented fact that poor nutrition has been one of the main factors that lead to different types of cancer. In the discussion part of this research paper, the authors conclude that based on their studies on America’s population, low folate intake leads to a hiked risk of ESCC (Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma) (Xiao et al., 2014). The findings of this research are practical and useful; especially since they give members
