The workplace would be an unsightly mess if employees did what they deem fit. The workplace would even look messier, more like an untamed wild, if employers did not have the guidelines to keep certain behaviors at bay. It is in this sense that business ethics-moral guidelines and beliefs that guide organizational member’s behavior and decisions- come into play, not to restrict people in personality and behavior, but as a moral compass for organizational performance. Business ethics guidelines include but are not limited to areas such as environmental regulation, wages, rights, responsibilities, employee-employee relationships or even moral policies holistically. Consequently, a corporation built on the foundation of ethical standards is rewarded with lasting positive relationships between employers and employees, retention of talented workers and even a good reputation within the community. Following this, the principal point of this paper is to explicate business ethics based on a marketing firm scenario. The paper also notes an ethical dilemma to help explain the concept of business ethics using a utilitarian and relativist approach.
