Overview:
Purpose: This paper will provide students with the opportunity to conduct a county level assessment by evaluating current, relevant data related to health status and health outcomes. This assignment also becomes the first part of the final assignment (Health Policy & Program Paper). Completion of this assignment meets the requirements of the USF General Education Council for Ethical Reasoning and Civic Engagement (ERCE) and the USF Global Citizen Project.

1. Complete the Community Assessment Activity Sheet (separate assignment). This will guide you as you navigate through the variety of resources. Students should examine their county of interest for background data as well as population strengths and weaknesses.

- The area for this assignment is Las Vegas, Nevada, Clark County
- The areas of improvement that I have started to explore when I was filling out my Assessment Activity Sheet is excessive drinking and alcohol-impaired driving deaths. Feel free to explore these topics or some other ones.

County and State: Clark County, Nevada
Identify three (3) areas of strength in your county compared to state and/or national benchmarks. Provide the rationale for the selection. Include a citation after each statement in APA format.
- Population of Las Vegas and Clark County has higher rates of access to exercise opportunities at 97% compared to 93% for the state of Nevada. Top US performers: 91% (County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, 2020).
- Hight school graduation in Clark County is at 83%, compared to 81% for the state of Nevada. It is gradually approaching US top-performer county 96% (County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, 2020).
- Unemployment rate in Clark Country is at 4.8%, compared to 4.6% for the state of Nevada. Top US performer in this category is at 2.6% (County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, 2020).

- Adult smoking is at 17% in Clark County, compared to 18% for the state of Nevada. It is higher than US top-performing counties 14% (County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, 2020).
- Excessive drinking in Clark County is at 18%, which is lower than 19% for the state of Nevada, but higher than the top-performing counties 13% (County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, 2020).
- Flu vaccinations in Clark County is at record low of 34% and the state of Nevada 37%, which indicates a significant difference to compare with US top-performing counties 53% (County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, 2020).

- Excessive drinking
- In Clark County, excessive drinking exceeds US top-performing counties by 5%, and barely lower than the state of Nevada, which is 19% (County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, 2020). The alcohol is readily available everywhere 24 hours a day, and seven days a week; to compare to other states and counties that limit their alcohol accessibility to certain hours or days of the week. In addition, Las Vegas is known for gambling, drugs, and prostitution, which creates an unhealthy culture of the risky behavior and contributes to excessive drinking and alcohol-impaired driving deaths, which are in Clark County at 28%, to compare to US top-performing counties at 11%, and the state of Nevada 29% (County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, 2020).
