In this order, you will be creating a content area curriculum unit. I will be uploading 2 ELA lesson plans and 2 Science lesson plans. You must create a six week scope-and-sequence/curriculum mapping which includes the 2 ELA lesson plans, and you must create another scope-and-sequence/curriculum mapping which includes the 2 Science lesson plans. I will be attaching some resources that you could review prior to beginning this project. My professor also provided a template of a "curriculum mapping" that you could use for both content areas (i.e., ELA and Science). You could use that template since it already contains the six week scope-and-sequence and curriculum mapping at once. You just have to include the context related to the lesson plans (ELA and Science). Once you have conducted those, you must move on to proceeding with the guidelines and information of the assignment. You need to include 10 or more peer-reviewed scholarly journals from the year 2007 and over. My professor wants for you to focus on present best practices/research for this assignment. APA format. Furthermore, please read the course project instructions in-depth. I will also be attaching this for you to review more clearly.

"Dear All,

Your Course Project has not changed, but became slightly easier.

The course project, Key Assessment, is a development of the curriculum. It has its own guidelines and among other items that have to be included in the paper, you need to complete two consecutive lessons in ELA and two lessons in one other core content area (Science).

Just remember one thing: your two lessons in ELA and one other areas have to be part of the six week scope- and-sequence or curriculum mapping. For the final assignment, Key assessment, you will submit two ELA/ESL lessons and a six-week curriculum mapping/scope-and-sequence and two lessons in another area of your choice (Science) with a six week curriculum mapping/scope and sequence. The two lessons should be part of the six-week curriculum mapping in ELA and part of the curriculum mapping in another core-content area of your choice. In addition, you need to include in your final paper all other required components that are in the guidelines that I copied below.

Hope this will clarify a confusion that some of you still have.

COURSE PROJECT GUIDELINES

NCATE/TESOL KEY PROGRAM ASSESSMENT # 2: CONTENT AREA CURRICULUM UNIT

TESOL degree students need to submit this assignment on TaskStream.

Some of you have asked me if the article is printed prior to 2007 will it be possible to use it. The reason for this requirement is to ensure that students are working with the current information. However, if you feel that the article you have chosen meets your needs, you can use the article printed prior to 2007. Peer-reviewed scholarly journals.

Description of the Assessment

Candidates design a curriculum unit for English language learners in a specific grade and classroom which addresses two content areas (math, social studies, science, language arts: ELA, ESL, Native Language Arts etc.) through English as a Second Language methodology. The curriculum unit will focus on the development of integrated language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking), standards-based (NYS Common Core Learning Standards), and will also address issues of diversity in the home and in school.

Alignment with TESOL Standards: TESOL Standards are addressed in this assessment, including Standards 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Directions to the Candidates: Through the development of a Content Area Curriculum Unit, candidates will demonstrate their ability to integrate their knowledge of the English language system to design instruction that incorporate effective ESL strategies, innovative materials, technologies and questioning techniques necessary to teach ELLs content.  The Content Area Curriculum Unit through English as a Second Language methodology must include the following:

Descriptions:

- Introduction of the school, class, and grade/age level selected

- Description of the class and range in achievement levels of ELLs

Discussions:

- Linguistic and cultural backgrounds and strengths of students and families

- Application of relevant literature on ESL methodology and theories

- Development of all aspects of the English language in both social and academic contexts

Development of Content Area #1 and #2 Curriculum:

- Identify two content areas of focus and apply New York State Common Core Learning Standards (ELA and Science)

- Develop a scope and sequence for a curriculum with topics and research support (ELA and Science. You can follow a structure of  publishing companies in a table format as you can find it in teacher manuals)

- Develop two lessons for each content area with instructional activities, detailed strategies, and identified materials (including technology applications such as the Internet, Smartboard, etc.) that incorporate the components of the English language system in order to support ELLs’ acquisition of English. At least one lesson plan should incorporate technology. (ELA and Science)

- Family engagement activities

- Develop three appropriate assessments (test, quizzes, portfolio etc.) and grading rubrics: At least one assessment must incorporate technology.

Summary and Reflection (Reflection, Summary, Analysis, and Discussion. Your reflection and analysis as well as your curriculum should be supported by the research in the field. You should use at minimum 10 references. Your paper should be done in the format of a narrative. It is not a purely research paper, but it should be done in this format. It should be one document that will contain 4 lessons (2 per each content area that makes it a unit), a six- scope and sequence for each of the two content areas, all the required components of the curriculum outlined previously including a parent component (includes family engagement activities), and the reflection. You should have a cover page and a reference page with at least 10 references that you will use in order to support your discussion and justification of strategies used in the lessons or support the curriculum structure selected. These 10 references on the Reference page should match 10 used in the body of the paper).

The Length of the paper is at minimum 10 - 15 pages.

Mechanics
The Course project  must be type-written and double-spaced, 10 (10) to fifteen (15) pages total not including the title page, and the reference page, and use at least ten (10) scholarly references. For grading the research paper, please refer to the rubrics. When possible, the statements on the purpose of the lesson or activity and the analysis must be supported by references from literature in the field. This section should be at least five pages long. American Psychological Association (APA) format must be followed for references and citations. Please refer to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th Ed., 2001) printed by the APA.  You can also refer to the APA sheets at the end of this syllabus.

Technical Requirements for the course paper:
1. Papers must be typed on one side of standard-sized 8x11 paper.
2. Title page. Title pages must include these elements: college; course title; section and instructor
3. Assignment title; author and date due
4. Reference page, which is the last page. Put the word References on top and in the middle of the page. Do not underline or boldface it. It should also be double-spaced.
5. The typeface (font) should be a standard 12 Times New Roman .
6. Double-spaced with 1 inch margins on all sides
7.  All pages are to be numbered consecutively, beginning with the title page.

You should work on the curriculum project for ELLs.
You should consider the following:

A grade level.

2. Curriculum units it two content areas with the use of ESL methodology

3. Your unit should include content objectives and language objectives

4. You should include standards, which means your units should be standards-based (include NYS Common Core Standards)

5. Address the issues of diversity in the classroom
6. Your units should demonstrate your ability to integrate effective strategies, innovative materials, technologies, and questioning techniques.

7. Your units should be focused on development of integrated language skills such as reading, writing, listening, and speaking

8. A scope and sequence for six weeks - a six-week curriculum (there is a template in the course project folder. You can use it for your own purposes. The scope and sequence should include weeks when you teach the content; topics; concepts/skills; activities/resources; and assessment. You can create it in a format of a curriculum table such as the one in front of textbooks. You will develop lessons to address one-week's mapping. For the rest of the 5 weeks, you should leave them in the format of an outline, or a table, and you don't have to create lesson plans for those remaining week.

9. Total 4 lesson plans should be done in two weeks, so 2 for one content area and 2 for another. If it is not always possible to have it done in one week, then you should explain why they will be done in two weeks. Two-week lesson plans are possible in that case. The idea is to create 2- lesson plans (a unit plan) in each content area, and you can adjust how long they will take.

10. You should also develop rubrics as part of the assessment for two content areas;

11. The use of technology should be part of the unit plan and included in the scope and sequence.

12. You should have a component for parents that includes family engagement activities

13. Total 5 to 7 pages would be just enough for a literature review and argumentation/reflection. The rest of the project should include the actual lessons (two unit plans), parent component, materials, and scope and sequence or curriculum mapping. This way your project can be kept within 10 to 15 pages or more;

14. You should include in the paper your reflection, summary, analysis, and discussion. Your reflection and analysis as well as your curriculum should be supported by the research in the field. You should use at minimum 10 references. Your paper should be done in the format of a narrative. Even though is not a purely research paper,  still it should be done in this format.

15. When working on the project please refer to NCATE/TESOL CONTENT-AREA CURRICULUM PROJECT RUBRIC (in another word doc.)

**Note: When I conducted the 4 lesson plans, I wanted my professor's constructive feedback(s) on them to ensure that I was on the right track. These are my professor's comment(s). "The lessons are fine. However, the reflection that you included in the lesson can stay the way they are, but you NEED to include a comprehensive commentary in the overall project that is called Content Area Curriculum Project. You need to write a comprehensive paper that has an introduction supported by research, development (lesson plans), commentary supported by the research (i.e, justification, analysis, reflection), a conclusion (i.e., implications), a reference page, appendices (i.e., materials, etc)."**

Please note that this is graduate level work and must be done correctly. Please review all of the materials carefully, my professor's instructions, rubric for the course project, 4 lesson plans that I created (2 ELA and 2 Science) prior to working on this specific project. Furthermore, please DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. I repeat, DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. Make sure that you follow the guidelines and ensure that you meet everything that the instructions is asking for, as well as meeting the standards of the rubric to ensure that you receive all points possible. PLEASE check for spellings/grammatical errors. Do your best, PLEASE. Think critically, creatively, and most importantly, ensure that you provide present research/best practices that is able to support your idea and knowledge in this project.

You are focusing in grade 1, english language learners and diverse students.
