Essay Paper:
This is a 3-4 page descriptive expository essay formatted in MLA or APA style.
OVERVIEW
Throughout these next 16 weeks we will be gaining a deeper understanding of the discourse communities that surround us, as well as what it takes to write a research paper. But first, you will test your own knowledge of a community you are interested in studying. The purpose of the essay paper is to begin making claims that you will later support with data, or research, and arguments, or warrants, in the final paper. For this paper, choose onecommunity you are a part of or are interested, identify claims about the group and evaluate the claims. Consider using claims that you hear from the media, your friends or family, or that you believe or think represent the community.
Claims: Identify and evaluate claims throughout your paper with a goal of creating a working thesis. Think about the different kinds of communities with which you may be associated: family, work, neighborhood, academic, spiritual, virtual, political, etc. Consider what values, beliefs, ideals, relationships, stereotypes, etc. are shared in this community. Does it always hold true? How does this group communicate? What mediums of communication do they use? Are there any informal traditions?
Group: Make claims about the dynamics of your group. Describe those who participate in this community discourse. What’s the group’s history? Has it changed overtime? Switched locations/regions? Is it influenced by a particular culture or larger set of traditions? Also, place yourself in relation to that group.
Sources: You should not do anyresearch. Everything in this paper should come from your own
knowledge or what you think you know (and even what you’d like to know) about your chosen group. Consider using claims that you hear from the media, your friends or family, or that you believe or think represent the community. Explain these claims in the essay.
Mechanics: Your essay should be clean of spelling/grammatical errors, demonstrating that you have proofread your work before submission. It should be properly formatted in MLA or APA style (see https://www.mla.org/MLA-Style or https://apastyle.apa.org ).
