Domestic violence is defined as the act of willfully intimidating an intimate partner through psychological or physical means. Domestic violence has been a major problem for many families in America. It affects individuals in every society regardless of their religious affiliation, race, gender, sexual orientation, or even economic status. Domestic violence can be committed in various forms. These include among others; slapping, pushing, slamming one against an object, hitting with a fist, pulling hair and using a knife/gun. Figures indicate that around a third of USA women have been subjected to domestic violence in the recent past. This statistic is not only disturbing but also worrying to say just but the least. As such, it is a very serious issue in American society.
It should be noted that domestic violence is not only confined to physical abuse alone. It is wide-ranging to other forms of emotional and psychological abuse. For a long time, people in relationships have been undergoing the psychological and emotional forms of violence without their knowledge (Sokoloff, 2015). As a result, such cases have not been reported to the relevant authorities for further investigations. The negative effects of domestic violence cannot be over-emphasized. It affects not only the couples involved but also the children and other related parties. The problems highlighted above among others compelled me to do a review on domestic violence.
