Electronic sports commonly referred to as e-sports refers to a high-level of spectating and play involving digital video-games (Kozachuk et al., 2016, p. 2118). Typically, e-sports involve players that are formed in teams so that they can perform at the highest level. The simplified definition of e-sports is that it relates to sports activities that use communication and information technologies in order to train and develop people’s physical and mental abilities (Wagner, 2006). The broader research of e-sports seeks to understand e-sports in general and just what kinds of games are played in online gaming. From there, the paper narrows down to understand the ways in which e-sports have grown to the extent that it almost enjoys the same level of popularity witnessed in traditional sports.
