The role which ethical standards play to an organization cannot be underscored. By nature, ethics enables employees to work in a professional manner. The absence of ethical standards in an organization leads to unprofessionalism which translates to poor performance. In the case presented, it is clear that my colleague and friend, Jim, has not been observing ethical standards. As such, I am in a dilemma whether to promote him or not.  This paper delves into the ethical issues raised in the case study.

What to Do?

I will gather information from my fellow staff on how Jim has been behaving in the past. I will be very much interested in knowing whether he has been meeting the set deadlines or not. This will enable me to determine whether he is a hard worker or not. I will also employ the management by walking around (MBWA) leadership style to conduct surprise visits aimed at knowing whether the Jim is indeed a slacker as purported by other employees. I will also try to find out why Jim is not popular among the employees. This could be as a result of him being strict on his work.
