One of the reading assignments discussed this week is an essay entitled, "Africa," by Kevin K. Gaines, which discusses many uses and misuses of the concept of a person or cultural element having real or perceived African association.

In a typed reflection essay (double-spaced, no larger than 12 font, default margins) discuss how you feel Gaines' arguments provide clues as to why it may be difficult to determine whether American jazz music contains authentic African influences. You may also draw upon information from class discussion and class resources in your response. Avoid direct quotation of Gaines' essay, instead relying on your interpretation of his arguments in your own words.

Your essay should follow these guidelines of format and structure:

  1. Introduction paragraph with a thesis statement that is underlined. (Thesis statement is a sentence describing your essay's main argument).
  2. Organize your thoughts into body paragraphs.
  3. Include a short conclusion.
