My professor is asking for an expository essay on the topic of, "How is technology influencing obesity in children?" This essay is just a short essay. She is asking for more of a "rough draft" so it doesn't need to be anything crazy. She is also asking for an outline to provide out main points. I will attach her version of an outline and what she expects in the essay.

EDUC 306: Here is an example of your first draft for a paper.

Start with your outline, being sure to use the numbers 1-5.

  1. Technology use in America’s children has contributed to a rise in obesity for the nation’s youth.
  2. Technology use in children increases snacking and mindless eating.
  3. Sleep patterns for children are interfered because of tech use.
  4. Food marketing is targeted at children while they are on the internet.
  5. The problem with obesity in our nation’s youth can be managed with a focus on all factors that are associated with technology use.

Then, place your essay here, using your outline as your topic sentences for your paragraphs. You can add a title if you like.

Technology use in America’s children has contributed to a rise in obesity for the nation’s youth. The maximum recommended hour’s children should have electronics a day is two hours and the average is seven hours. Many parents use technology as a way to keep their children entertained so they can do what they need to. Obesity is not just a weight issue it also ties in with their children’s social and emotional development. The more children rely on technology the less social they become and the less outgoing they become. Going outside and being physical help children burn off calories that have may have ate during the day.

Technology use in children increases snacking and mindless eating. The sugary and unhealthy snacks are usually the easiest for children to get and they do not have to take extra time to make because it is ready to eat. Physical activity is also limited because children are more focused on their phones or games than going out and playing sports. Most children do not know how to cook and snacks are the way to get something fast to eat and it is more than likely unhealthy. Children need to create healthy eating habits to help decrease the chance of being obese.

Food marketing is targeted at children while they are on the internet. The advertisement companies know that children are their targets and that is why they push adv0ertisements to places where children frequent. Also the influence of ads or commercials advertise the unhealthy snacks to children on their games or shows. Children are more likely to want sugary foods compared to the healthier foods because of all the advertisements for those items are flashy and interesting. Limiting the screen time one has will decrease the advertisements that are seen and being persuaded to by the company’s products.

Sleep patterns for children are interfered because of tech use.  Children that use technology right before bedtime have a harder time falling asleep. Also if children’s screen time is not monitored it can lead to later bedtimes which means less sleep. According to Valley Medical Weight loss (2017) “On average, a person who doesn’t get enough sleep eats an extra 300 calories per day and snacks more often than someone who is well-rested.” Not sleeping enough causes the hormones in one’s body to not work properly and can cause your ghrelin hormone which tells you you’re hungry to increase. The problem with obesity in our nation’s youth can be managed with a focus on all factors that are associated with technology use.

The problem with obesity in our nation’s youth can be managed with a focus on all factors that are associated with technology use. There is not just one thing that causes obesity in the world but it can be maintained and decreased by changing a few different things.  Obesity can be maintained by becoming more physically active, eating better, and having less screen time.  Children need to have a schedule and be told what they need to do because they will do what is easier for them. Limiting technology use while at home can help children spend more time being physically active.
