Galileo’s Battle for the Heavens

Galileo’s Battle for the Heavens movie is based on a novel by Dova  Sobel which covers the life of Galileo in trying to set up a new theory and proof that the sun is the centre of the Universe (NOVA,  2014). The theory of his argumentation was based on the theory and scholarly work established by Corpenicus who had been a predecessor in the field of physics and in the astronomy (NOVA, 2O14). Corpenicism was of the view that the center of the universe is the sun and not the earth. The assertions contravened the Roman Catholic’s beliefs that the earth lay at the center of the universe with the sun hovering over it. The Roman Catholic Church was the supreme authority of the day and anyone who contradicted it was palpable of high offenses which could even amount to death. Galileo had continued to be a benefactor of the church’s riches as it supported his inventions in science by giving him grants. Throughout his life Galileo had established good relationship with the priests of the Catholic church among them being Priest Pierre Gassendi and Marin Mersenne (Scientus.org, 2018). These relationships always saw him earn respect and financial support. At the same time they were significant in paving way for his daughter Marrie to become a Catholic nun.
