First, choose a business with which you are reasonably familiar. This can be any business; perhaps, you have even worked in this business. Now, imagine that you have identified a particular business function or unit that is in need of a training intervention within this company (i.e., who needs training [person analysis]). For example, the business could be a design firm and the functional area could be bridge and superstructure construction.

Go to the Department of Labor’s Occupational Information Network (O*NET ®), which may be found at online.onetcenter.org, and keyword search an occupation that matches business function from your person needs analysis. You may choose any occupation that you would like as long as it appears in O*NET (e.g., civil engineers could be an occupation from the above example business and function).
