Reader/Response Essay First Draft
Earlier this month in Module #2 you annotated two short works of nonfiction, David Sedaris’ “Me Talk Pretty One Day,” and Gloria Anzaldúa’s “How to Tame a Wild Tongue.” The themes of both works revolve around language and its ability to both bring us closer to others and keep us distant. Unfortunately, in our current cultural climate, division and distance often form the crux of our social problems, and all too often, language is used as a weapon against other cultures, races, and other ethnicities. Instead of bringing us together, weaponized language serves to keep us distinct and apart.
Your Assignment: Compose the first draft of a 3-4-page Reader/Response Essay where you choose ONE of the two paired readings. A Reader/Response Essay begins with a 1. SUMMARY of the intended work and moves to 2. AN ANALYTICAL APPROACH toward the work. During the analytical section, I would like you to draw a parallel between language and its use in our current society.
Note: Essays MUST be formatted observing MLA format ONLY. They must have in-text citations. They must have a Works Cited. Essays without these criteria will receive failing grades.
