Scavenger Hunt

This assignment should be submitted to dropbox by September 29h at 11:59pm.

All of these questions can be answered using the complete version of the DSM-5.   Please limit your responses to no more than 300 words per question.  Post both the questions and your responses.

Questions:

1. In your own words, summarize the DSM-5 definition of “mental disorder?”  Comment on its fit with a social work perspective.

2.  Find “ataque de nervios” in the DSM-5.  Give a definition in your own words and note why cultural concepts of distress are of interest to social workers.

3. The section for “Disorders Usually First Diagnosed in Infancy, Childhood, or Adolescence” that appeared in the DSM-IV-TR is not included in the DSM-5.  Instead, references to age are included within the diagnostic categories as relevant.  Find two diagnoses that have information that is specific to children within the diagnostic criteria and list the information that is relevant to children.

4.  A conceptual shift embodied in the DSM-5 is the intent to move away from a categorical model and towards a dimensional model.  Therefore, severity scales have been added to a number of diagnoses.  Review the instrument that will be used to rate severity level of Autism Spectrum Disorder.  Highlight the content of that instrument.

5. Name and provide the criteria for three conditions/problems for which the codes begin with the letter V.  You will find these in the “Other Conditions that may be a Focus of Clinical Attention” chapter in the DSM-5.  Why are the diagnoses in this section of particular interest to social workers?

6. In the DSM-5, read the diagnostic criteria for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and for Adjustment Disorders.  In your words, describe how they are alike and how they are different.

7.  According to the DSM-%, what is the clinical utility of the diagnosis of a mental disorder?

8.  In your opinion, should an individual experiencing sadness in the aftermath of the death of a loved one be diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder?  What guidelines are provided on this topic in the DSM-5?

9.  Review the DSM-5 section titled “Highlights of changes from the DSM-IV to DSM-5.”  Summarize two diagnostic categories that are of interest to you.

10.  Self-damaging and self-mutilating behavior are included in the diagnostic criteria for which personality disorder in the DSM-5?  Describe the disorder.
