The Cultural Revolution in China triggered a series of destruction on the country’s population. It was encouraged by the leader of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), whose aim was to rekindle the communist revolution spirit and punish the few who were viewed as infiltrators. When it started, the initial focus was placed on institutions of education. The goals of the revolution were to be enforced through the Red Guards. Unfortunately, the process resulted in anarchy and the people were terrified of the organization since any suspects would be persecuted and killed. By the time it had come to an end, many were already dead, and millions of others had been displaced from their homes. The economy of China had also been completely destroyed. This revolution was started to encourage communism, but instead the end result was acceptance of capitalism. This paper considers the example of Rae Yang who was present at the time of this Cultural Revolution. It analyses how the process ended up making her disillusioned, despite having been an enthusiastic and privileged child.
