Introduction

In the United States, obesity is one of the leading factors that increase the risk of cancer, diabetes and certain cardiac diseases. The rate of obesity in the United States is the highest in the world. The Harvard Business Review article ‘‘Taking the cake’’ by Ben Gerson highlights some of the real-time issues the society is dealing with as a result of an upsurge in obesity incidences in America.  The case is about Southland Baking Company, the 3rd largest cookie company in the United States, which due to a lawsuit, is under pressure to either change the ingredients it uses to manufacture cookies or include a warning on its packaging about the harmful effects of these ingredients. The company is in a dilemma because if it changes the ingredients even slightly, its taste will change and its primary clientele, children, will no longer enjoy the treats.
