The In Amenas Ordeal is one of the biggest hostage crisis' in the 21st century. It was lead by the known terrorist group Al Qaeda, but it was a cell in Algeria known as Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. It lead to the death of 39 hostages, as well as 29 terrorists. It took 3 days for the Algerian Special Forces to take down the terrorists, but some are wondering what caused it, what were the demands, and how it affects the world moving on.
There were many factors that caused this to happen. One is that Algeria is anti Al Qaeda, and have been fighting to keep Al Qaeda out of the region. In fact, since 2002, all of northern Africa has been fighting to keep Al Qaeda out of the region due to numerous attacks its carried out. Another reason why is that Algeria is a US ally, and Al Qaeda considers the United States as public enemy number one. Anyone who supports the United States is now the enemy of Al Qaeda. When they first captured them, Al Qaeda had some demands.
One of the demands that Al Qaeda had was the release of two federal prisoners held by the U.S on terrorism charges. They believed that if they had these guys back, they would be better in terms of carrying out their goal. Another demand that they had was the end of French Military involvement in North Africa. The French were a big part of Operation Enduring Freedom in the North and the Horn of Africa. After the entire crisis ended, it has effected the world for a long time.
One of the ways this effected the world was the increase of force by NATO and it's allies in Operation Enduring Freedom. Many were now head hunting the leader of this plan, and he was captured by the Green Berets sometime later. It also has lead to more hostage crisis' by other terrorist groups, like Al-Shabaab and other militant groups, even ISIS. Many people have died since then and terrorism has risen a lot. But, NATO and other nations have done a good job in keeping it under control. Though some are a bit hesitant to take action.
Situations like this are hard to think of. The though of being held hostage is scary, but knowing there are people willing to fight for your safety is great to know. We should do more to eradicate these bad people, and make this world a better place.
