The purpose of this assignment is give you practice with a style of writing popular in journalism: critical review. This kind of writing is different from the others that we’ve done so far in that you must work hard to engage your reader using creativity and wit. In other words, this is not a business-oriented, solicited piece of writing; you are not writing in response to a job ad or a request for instructions. Instead, you are writing a review catered to a particular audience of your choice. Your goal should be to appeal to your audience from the very beginning so that they decide to read your review and consider it for publication. Task Write a critical review of 500-800 words for the audience of your choice. You must pick a professional, credible publication venue that has a rigorous review process, like the NY Times, Rolling Stones, or the Boston Globe (NOT Amazon or Rotten Tomatoes). Be sure to indicate your chosen audience in the “comments” section on Canvas when you submit your assignment. Include a link to the site/audience if you can. You can choose to review a movie, TV series, book, video game, piece of software, or something else (with my approval). You must choose something released within the past two years (January 2015 or later). To get a sense of how to write an effective review, read several from your chosen venue. I also recommend reading reviews from the Boston Globe, NY Times, and Washington Post or other top newspapers/presses. Keep in mind that your writing should be concise, witty, engaging, sarcastic (if it fits your style), and Parts Your critical review should include the following: A catchy title Some kind of summary or general introduction of the text or thing reviewed An evaluation or judgment of the text or thing reviewed (comment on both strengths and weaknesses) A nuanced recommendation Evaluation The appropriateness, clarity, engagement, and creativity—as well as its responsiveness to your chosen audience—will collectively count for 80% of the grade. The remaining 20% will be determined by surface language features: punctuation, grammar, and mechanics. *Keep in mind the six qualities that make something stick. How can you make your review “sticky”? What, if anything, from the text/thing under review is “sticky”? Remember, “stickiness” is based on the following: simplicity, unexpectedness, concreteness, credibility, emotionality, and story. Any effective text has an awareness of how these elements are at play.
